Many companies and individuals build their web sites every day. The companies that provide this service as called web hosts and the service they provide is called web hosting. Web hosting is a service where the company provides the bandwidth and the disk space to a particular web site on the web server. These companies also provide other services like registering domains, connecting internet and data centers.

With the help of specialized applications created by Linux or Windows, like HTML, a file is created. This file is then uploaded on the lease space on the web provided by your web hosting company. The web hosting company will then give you your domain name or URL, which is nothing but the IP address on the web server. Each time a person browses for your website, the server will direct him to your address. The simplest way of doing this is via File Transfer Protocol.

There are different kinds of web hosting to suit your requirement, financial budget and preferences. However, you must know that performance and price go hand in hand. The more you pay the better performance you get.

1. Free Web Hosting: These are usually offered free by your web hosting company as a part of internet connectivity. However, they have very limited features and are sponsored by advertisers.
2. Shared Web Hosting: In this case, a single server caters to hundreds of websites. They have a huge range of applications available but need to be shared by other websites.
3. VPS Web Hosting: This type of web hosting is something in between Shared web hosting and dedicated web hosting.
4. Dedicated Web Hosting: This is the most expensive of all as a single server is completely dedicated to your website and you are in control of the server and its features.
